Buy and hold DuPont (DD)?

It’s one of America’s oldest companies. But if you’ve owned it the last 20 years, you’re in for a world of pain- according to the posters on Yahoo’s Message Board.

“Folks, DD has slammed into the gutter once again, down, down, down to a new 17-year low of 21.18 in early trading this morning, Feb. 18, 2009.

Folks, fully 80% of the value of the decaying DuPont Company has disappeared since its peak of May 19, 1998, when the stock sold for 84.44.!”

But as several remarked- DuPont really isn’t that different from many of the other blue chips (and Dow components) that are finding themselves at lows last seen in the mid-1990s.
